Apple is releasing three new tools to help people protect their cloud-based data.

According to an Apple press release, the extra security measures would be deployed progressively over the next year.

In the release, Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi noted, “We continually find and prevent emerging vulnerabilities to their personal data on device and in the cloud.”

According to Apple, consumers will have three powerful new tools to better secure their most sensitive data and communications: iMessage Contact Key Verification, Security Keys, and Advanced Data Protection for iCloud. “Our security staff work tirelessly to protect our users’ data.”

Security Keys for Apple ID allow users to choose whether they want to use a third-party physical security key to login into their Apple ID account in order to prevent hackers from obtaining the second factor in two-factor authentication through a phishing attempt. This capability will be available to everyone starting in early 2023.

The third new feature, Advanced-Data Safety for iCloud, which delivers Apple’s highest level of cloud data protection, now covers a total of 23 types of data, including iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and other iCloud data.

Members of Apple’s Beta Software Program can access this feature in the United States right now. It will be available to all American consumers by the end of the year and will be available globally in early 2023.
